Opening Day on the Saginaw River and Houghton Lake

It’s the second year in a row Sam and I had the opportunity to open the waterfowl season up together. This year was going to be a little more exciting; as we got to hunt two days earlier than normal by heading up to Houghton Lake for the Middle Zone opener here in Michigan, and our good friend Brian Edwards would be joining us. Brian is no slouch when it comes to waterfowl hunting and was a huge part of the success we had hunting up in that area. We left Brian’s place in Mount Pleasant around [Read More]

The First Goose

I don’t remember the exact date, but it was fairly early in the 2014 Michigan waterfowl season. It was later October I believe, and Sam and I had plans to meet up with his buddy A.P. to hunt Rose Lake. It was a relatively mild Michigan morning. The temperature was in the 40’s with little to no wind and no fog. It was the most ideal of waterfowl hunting conditions. We met up with A.P. at a gas station on the way to Rose Lake so we could stock up on coffee and beef jerky for the days [Read More]

Pack of coyotes blamed for killing sheriff’s horse

Coyotes had gotten bolder on her Oxford Township farm in the past year, said Kallie Meyers. On Sunday, she discovered how bold. A pack of the canines killed one of her female horses, assigned to the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department mounted division, she said. "That's not how I wanted a horse that was so loyal and so good ... to spend her last moments," said Meyers, who, along with her husband, Dr. Bruce Meyers, are reserve deputies with the Sheriff's Department. Around 3 p.m. Sunday, [Read More]

The Remington 870

The 870 has proved to be a legend of a bird gun.  Not only for me, but many others.   Considering a new shotgun?  On a budget?  I beg you to consider the Remington 870. [Read More]

The Stoeger M3000

The gun I hunt with is a Stoeger M3000. I spent a lot of time looking for the perfect waterfowl gun for this upcoming season. I had an old Remington my dad had passed down to me, but I really wanted an auto-loading shotgun. So I began researching, testing, more researching and reading lots of reviews on various guns. When I finally settled on the Stoeger it was because of the reliability and the internal components. Benelli had bought out Stoeger a few years back and I was really [Read More]

Rifle River Hunt

Let me start off by saying this weekend, was awesome. Good times with great company. The weather could have been a little better, seeing as it would rain after shoot time, while we all wanted to be by the campfire, and be blue skies while we're actually out ducking around.   Rifle River It really doesn't get much more beautiful than up here in the Fall. If you have time to climb up the Lookout tower, there is no question that this is Pure Michigan. Leaves changing colors [Read More]

Ebb Tide Calls

Ebb Tide Calls is a family owned and operated business I came across while looking Instagram one day. Tate Estis is a 14 year old out of Virginia who hand turns all his own calls. This kid does some amazing work on the lathe turning these calls. I finally caved and purchased a double reed mallard hen call from him. In about a week and a half the call was in my possession. Tate went to his backyard chopped down a walnut tree and hand turned me a beautiful cross cut walnut call with a nice [Read More]
